A beloved cottage inspires a new seaside home with family
gathering spaces and all the charm of its predecessor
Building a new house was not on the agenda when photographers Amy and Joe Keller bought a summer cottage on the South Shore, south of Boston. But the family outgrew the home after their son Benjamin was born. While adding on seemed the natural solution, structural considerations made
an addition cost-prohibitive. So the Kellers had the house torn down
and built a new one.
The new cottage looks remarkably like the couple’s old home, a
result that thrills them. “I love the idea that our new house feels like
the old house,” Amy says. With its gambrel roof and porch on the
exterior and tongue-and-groove ceilings and pale wood floors on the
interior, the 2,600-square-foot home boasts an additional 1,500 square
feet of family-friendly spaces along the back.
